ICANN Acronym Helper Application

A useful tool which can easily be implemented would be an App that would explain the Acronyms used by the ICANN community. At the moment there are three places where you can look ICANN acronyms up and these are: the Andalucia.com website, gnso.icann.org and icann.org. My suggestion would be to create an application available on both Android and IOS, that would put together the three previously mentioned databases. ...more »

Use virtual reality to enable face to face interactions online

Academics have been fooling around with this for years. Heck, our very own Bret Faucett set up an "ICANN Island" in Second Life almost 10 years ago. It wasn't good/stable enough back then. But maybe it's time to try again. Here's a cool product that might be a way to do that http://www.oculusvr.com/ But even a better version of Second Life would be a game changer for people who will never be able to afford to travel ...more »

STRUCTURAL & LEGAL

Purchasing Platform

I have noticed that ICANN is not contracting by publishing any RFP any more. I understand from raising this in the BA meeting that ICANN is contracting a purchasing manager. Ms Beth Noveck commented that research indicated that traditional purchasing stifled inovation and there were 21 Century aproches to this. This is an area to explore.

Document Management

ICANN should identify documend management proceedures. This could rande is from the simplest form of rules and standards to be used by staff and community for document naming, of different editions and drafts. Multiple perssons are working from existing document of blank starts and mutliply drafts need to be merged. A convention for coument naming pluc a methology for combining content. The must have been extensive work ...more »

ISSUE IDENTIFICATION

Supercharged Outreach: Improve accessibility of ICANN issues

If ICANN is to become a broad-based multistakeholder organization, it must translate highly-technical issues for a variety of its stakeholders. In other words, ICANN needs a better strategy for making obtuse technical issues more accessible and actionable by the communities it wishes to engage. My suggestion is to supercharge the outreach arm of ICANN. The effort would need to a) Identify target communities. b) Reach ...more »

STRUCTURAL & LEGAL

Overheard at ICANN48: Create an ICANN Open Data Policy

ICANN could create an open data policy to facilitate reuse of information and the creation of new services.

–What kind of data collected by ICANN, registries, registrars, etc. could be subject to this open data policy?

ISSUE IDENTIFICATION

The myth of multistakeholder government

Although everybody talks about multistakeholde in ICANN, I have seen it only in the GNSO, and in the Council there is a disbalance between contractual and non contractual parties. The other SOs and ACs have no multistakeholder organization, neither the NRO or the regional registries. So, considering ICANN as a whole, multistakeholder participation is very limited and covers not a big part of it. If we are going to have ...more »

Use Namecoin to decentralize DNS

Use namecoin for name resolution. Reasons: * it's 100% compatible with current web browsers: users just won't be connected to namecoin directly but to a DNS<>namecoin proxy. * It's tamper and censorship resistant. No-one can remove, alter a record in blockchain. * It's completely independent: This settles the issue of governance. * It's completely distributed so it's very difficult to attack via DDoS. * Governments ...more »

DEVELOPING & PRIORITIZING SOLUTIONS

Method for Prioritizing Issues after Identification

Folks concerned with Internet Governance and ICANN oversight might recall that a ranked-choice voting method was used by ICANN in October 2000 to select five At-Large Board members. ICANN’s online global election was a Very Big Deal at the time. I was a front-row witness to those events, researching a Ph.D. dissertation on the DNS controversy, and sometimes participating in relevant working groups. I came away from ...more »

WWW of Intentions, Stakeholders & Results

ICANN’s vision is: “one world, one Internet”. StratML's vision is highly complementary: "a world wide web of intentions, stakeholders, and results." Whereas IANA and DNS are about connecting computers, StratML is about enabling computers to connect *people* with shared values and common objectives. In crafting the new strategic plan for IANA, it would be good to explore prospects for leveraging the StratML standard. ...more »

ISSUE IDENTIFICATION

A "Bug Bounty" program for the DNS (& other Internet standards)

Sponsor a new program that pays big cash rewards to whitehat hackers who uncover security/stability bugs threatening the stability of the Internet at large managed by a panel of volunteer experts. These experts are responsible for defining the rules of the program, allocating bounties to where additional security research is needed most, and mediating any disagreements that might arise. See example by Microsoft and Facebook: ...more »

ISSUE IDENTIFICATION

Overview thoughts - and risks of jumping too fast to options!

The challenge – how to govern a global commons in ways that are effective and legitimate, and how to design a process to improve governance. We know that it’s … • unsustainable to have power in the hands of a self-appointed group; • illegitimate for the US to be in a uniquely powerful position; • undesirable to have something like the Internet run by states; • problematic to have excessive control in hands of a few ...more »

ISSUE IDENTIFICATION

Leveraging multistakerholder forums to canvas ICANN issues

An experiment ICANN could institute is a programme that more actively and formally utilises multistakeholder governance forums with wider representation such as IGF, to consult on issues, that require more equitable multistakeholder participation to be resolved. This relationship could be formalised through setting of transparent agenda setting and consultation processes with clear lines of accountability on how the ...more »
